Majumdar, 79, suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been hospitalized for more than a month.

Sahitya Akademi award-winning Bengali writer Samaresh Majumdar, known for portraying the turbulent Naxalite period in the 1970s, died in a private hospital in Kolkata on Monday night, an official of the foundation confirmed.

Majumdar, 79, suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and has been hospitalized for more than a month.

“Majumdar has been suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for more than 12 years. He has been under our treatment for more than a month. His health has deteriorated recently and he was on a ventilator. He passed away at around 5.45pm.”

Known for his political trilogy – Uttaradhikar, Kalbela and Kalpurush, Majumdar also wrote short stories and travelogues.

He won the ‘Sahitya Akademi Award’ for the movie ‘Kalbela’, on the background of the Naxalite movement. Majumdar’s detective character “Arjun” was very popular not only among the youth but also among the adults.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee expressed his condolences on the death of Majumdar, saying that this is an irreparable loss for the world of literature.
