The Met Office has suggested regulating tourism, marine activities and shipping near the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and over marine areas in the southeast and central Bay of Bengal until Friday.

The Met Office said the low pressure area that developed over the southeastern Bay of Bengal on Monday is expected to develop into a cyclone and is likely to advance towards the coast of Bangladesh and Myanmar later this week.

During a press conference, Mr. Marityunjay Mohapatra, Director General of the Indian Meteorological Department, stated that the low pressure area is expected to gather into a depression by Tuesday evening and then escalate into a cyclonic storm the next day.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee assured people on Monday that necessary precautionary measures have been taken and that there is no need to panic as Cyclone Mocha may not make landfall in the eastern state.

“There is no reason to panic about Cyclone Mocha…it may not make landfall in West Bengal. But coastal areas of the state have been asked to remain alert. Alerts have been issued in the Sunderbans and Digha on May 10 and 11 as a precautionary measure.”

The Alipur Meteorological Department said the depression that formed over the Bay of Bengal would not have a significant impact on the state.

He asked fishermen, ships, trawlers and small boats not to venture into the southeast Bay of Bengal and urged those in the area to return to the coast.

The hurricane will be called Mocha (Mokha), a name proposed by Yemen after the Red Sea port city that is known to have introduced coffee to the world more than 500 years ago.

“The cyclonic storm will initially move north-northwest into the central Bay of Bengal until May 11 and then re-bend and move north-northeast towards the coast of Bangladesh and Myanmar,” Mohapatra said.

Wind speed can reach 70 km per hour

The Meteorological Department said wind speeds could reach 50-60 kmph, and gusts of up to 70 kmph are likely over the southeastern Bay of Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and the neighboring Andaman Sea on Tuesday.

Under the influence of the weather system, Mohapatra said, the Andaman and Nicobar islands are expected to see very heavy rains on Tuesday.
