Army deployed in Pakistan’s Punjab to maintain law and order after Imran Khan’s arrest yesterday

Punjab (Pakistan): Army forces have been deployed to Pakistan’s Punjab province to maintain law and order in the wake of protests that erupted after the arrest of the country’s former prime minister Imran Khan on Tuesday, Dawn reported.
“The Federal Government, in exercising the powers conferred under Article 245 of the Constitution and Section 4 (3) (2) of the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 (to perform the functions specified in the said Act), is pleased to authorize the deployment of forces/ The assets of the Pakistan Army to maintain law and order throughout the province of Punjab to assist the civil authority.”
“The exact numbers of troops/assets, date and area of ​​deployment will be determined by the provincial government in consultation with MO Dte, GHQ,” the notification said.
The governments of Punjab and Balochistan imposed Section 144 in their respective provinces on Tuesday in response to the protests held across the region following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf chief Imran Khan in Qader Trust case.
Angry protesters stormed government buildings and blocked roads in response to Imran Khan’s detention prompting the authorities to enact Article 144.
While his case against the Qadir University Trust is still being heard by the Special Accountability Tribunal, Khan is represented by a group of lawyers including Khawaja Haris, Attorney Ali Johar and Attorney Ali Bukhari.
Punjab’s interim government has brought in Pakistan guards, and mobile phone and internet services have been suspended in the province, according to Samaa TV.
Important decisions to address the law and order situation across the province were taken at a meeting of the Provincial Intelligence Committee chaired by the Additional Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Interior.
In the wake of the ongoing unrest, the Islamabad administration has also implemented Section 144 in the metropolitan area.
