Islamabad: Imran KhanPakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on Wednesday filed a Supreme Court petition challenging the Islamabad High Court ruling upholding the arrest of the former prime minister in a corruption case, according to a media report. The 70-year-old Khan was arrested by the paramilitary Rangers in a corruption case from the International Humanitarian City and put in a prison van sparking mass protests across the country by his PTI supporters.
The newspaper “Dawn News” that the petition was submitted on Wednesday to the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling, which was announced by the Supreme Islamic Court on Tuesday evening.
“A case was filed before the Supreme Court by lawyer Ali Zafar and the movement’s leader, Fawad Chowdhury, to challenge the ruling of the International Criminal Court against Imran Khan,” the report said.
On Wednesday, following Khan’s arrest, the deputy head of the movement, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, called an emergency meeting of the seven-member committee to review the situation and devise a comprehensive strategy to secure the safe and early release of the party chief.
Qureshi discussed with members of the committee members of the Senate Saifullah Khan NiaziAzam Swati, Aijaz Chowdhury, Murad SaidAli Amin Khan Kandapur and Hassan Niazi.
“PTI will challenge IHC’s decision to label the arrest of party chief Imran Khan by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as ‘legal’ before the Supreme Court today (Wednesday),” he was quoted as saying in the report.
Qureshi, the former foreign minister, confirmed that the demand for Khan’s release is reasonable and legitimate.
Khan appeared in an accountability court on Wednesday and the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) requested effective detention for Khan for 14 days.
Moreover, the deputy head of PTI described the “Al-Qadir Trust” case as a “dirty political affair” and a “revenge plot,” and emphasized: “We will fight it politically and legally.”
He added that the agency will organize peaceful but strong protests across the country to ensure the release of its chief as soon as possible, Geo news report said.
He also noted that the city was attacked to arrest Khan despite the fact that the head of the movement had offered voluntary arrest in his statement before appearing in court.
Stating that “Imran Khan’s arrest is fascism and he is doomed to attack the Islamabad High Court during biometrics and injuring the lawyers,” he made an appeal to the Chief Justice to order his immediate recovery and court appearance.
Khan’s party claimed that at least four people were killed and more than ten injured in different parts of the country in violent clashes between security forces and supporters of the movement.
Khan has been arrested in the case related to the Al Qadir Trust, owned by PTI chairman and his wife Bushra Bibi, which relates to the 2019 establishment of the Al-Qadir Sufi University in Sohawa district of Jhelum district of Punjab, a NAB official said Tuesday.
Khan’s arrest warrant issued on 1 May states that he is accused of corruption and corrupt practices.
The anti-corruption watchdog also justified the arrest of the Rangers-assisted PTI chief from inside the courthouse on Tuesday as lawful and in accordance with NAB statutes.
