Islamabad: Prime Minister of Pakistan Shahbaz Sharif said on Sunday that those involved in May 9th Violence and attacks on military installations and state institutions will not be spared.
Addressing a meeting held here on the law and order situation in the country after the violence that followed the arrest of Imran Khan, the ousted Prime Minister and Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf on May 9, Sharif said that “rioters” would not be allowed to escape the law.
“It was decided that everyone who participated in the events of May 9… the planners, the aggressors or anyone… will be punished according to the law and the constitution,” he said.
On 9 May, violent protests erupted after Khan was arrested in a corruption case by a paramilitary group of Rangers from the premises of the High Court in Islamabad.
His party workers sabotaged dozens of military facilities, incl Jinnah house (Home of the Corps Commander Lahore), Mianwali Air Base and ISI Building in Faisalabad. The Army Command (GHQ) in Rawalpindi was also attacked by mobs for the first time.
Police put the death toll in the violent clashes at 10 while Khan’s party claimed that 40 of its workers were killed in shootings by security personnel.
Thousands of Khan’s supporters were arrested in the aftermath of the violence, which the powerful military described as a “black day” in the country’s history.
Prime Minister Sharif said it was no joke that terrorists attacked air installations in Karachi and then dozens of Imran’s sons set fire to Mianwali’s plane which was used against the enemy.
He said, “I have asked the Chief Minister of Punjab regarding anti-terrorism courts, prosecutors, flight and information zones (…) and informed the Home Minister and the Director of the General Intelligence Bureau to fulfill their responsibilities as well.”
The prime minister likened the “violence of the movement on May 9” to the actions of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistani group.
The Pakistani Taliban set fire to Jinnah’s house in Ziarat (Balochistan) and the PTI set fire to Jinnah’s house in Lahore… which is now the headquarters of the main command.
Sharif, who is also the head of the PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz Party), said: “TTP attacked the general headquarters and these are enemies of the state… PTI… also attacked the general headquarters.”
He also said that the rioters also vandalized the state-run Radio Pakistan office in Peshawar.
“These events will psychologically affect the nation for years to come,” he said.
He also confirmed that people who attacked military installations would be prosecuted under the laws of the constitution.
“On the other hand, those involved in attacks on civilian institutions under the Anti-Terrorism Law will be tried by civilian courts,” he said.
He also described the May 9 violence as a “black day” in the country’s history.
He said, “We will remember it as the day when terrorism against the state was carried out by idiots under the orders of Imran Niazi.”
Niazi is Imran Khan’s tribal nickname but he never used it in his cricketing years as a politician, but Prime Minister Sharif and many other leaders use it to taunt.
