Sunil Ganawat, Coordinator of Maharashtra Mandir Mahasanga (Maharashtra Federation of Temples) stated that he has come up with a ‘Vastra Samhita’ for temples across the state.
Vastra Samhita, or dress code, has been introduced in four temples in Maharashtra’s Nagpur district, the state’s temple association said. The issue of dress in places of worship was in the news earlier this month when the state’s Tulja Bhavani temple tried to regulate how visiting worshipers should dress before withdrawing the order.
Maharashtra Mandir Mahasanga (Maharashtra Federation of Temples) has announced a ‘Vastra Samhita’ for temples across the state, Sunil Ghanawat, its coordinator, told reporters in Nagpur on Friday. At Bellori (Saoner), Brihaspati Temple at Kanolibara and Durgamata Temple at Hilltop district of Nagpur city from Friday, he said.
He said devotees should not wear “objectionable” clothes, adding that the decision was taken after a meeting of the Maharashtra Temple Trust Board in Jalgaon in northern Maharashtra in February. “The primary goal is to protect the sanctity of the temples. These symbols are in many temples.”
He said he would also ask Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to implement the law in government-controlled temples. A few days ago, the Tulga Bhavani temple in Osmanabad district tried to ban “indecent” clothing, such as shorts and Bermudas, in its premises, but the order was withdrawn within hours after it sparked outrage.
