From Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, tributes have poured in on the 59th anniversary of the death of India’s first Prime Minister and Congress stalwart Jawaharlal Nehru.

Gandhi, along with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharg, also visited Nehru’s memorial at Shanti Van and paid tribute to him with flowers. Senior captains KC Venugopal and Pawan Bansal were among those present at the memorial.

Born in 1889, Nehru remains India’s longest-serving Prime Minister. He held the premiership between August 1947 and May 1964, and died on 27 May 1964.
