Reece James has admitted that “everyone would be sad” to see Manchester United target Mason Mount if he left Chelsea this summer.
The England midfielder will enter the final year of his deal next month. Manchester United are believed to have opened talks for a deal and are willing to pay £55m, which is £30m less than Chelsea’s valuation.
James was recently asked for his views on Mount’s possible exit from Stamford Bridge. The right-back told Sky Sports via the Daily Mail:
“If he leaves, everyone will be sad that he is gone.”
Manchester United may be leading the race to sign Mount, but Liverpool and Arsenal are also believed to be vying for his services. He has been working on Blues Books since 2005 and James joined him the following year.
The two have risen through the ranks together but it looks like the Cobham graduates could be separated this summer. Mount, 24, has scored three goals and six assists in 35 appearances across competitions this season.
The England midfielder has been sidelined with an abdominal injury since April. The 2-0 loss in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Real Madrid (4-0 on aggregate) could be his last appearance in a Chelsea shirt.
Andy Cole has warned Manchester United that Chelsea’s Mason Mount will not strengthen his squad to a satisfactory extent.
The Red Devils are in negotiations with the Blues over the 24-year-old but have yet to reach an agreement. Cole, who played as a striker for Manchester United during his peak, told Cup Odds via Metro:
“None of the Chelsea players are better than Manchester United. They can’t be worse next season or they’ll be in big trouble. I know there’s talk about Mason Mount, he’s a decent player who works hard and transforms. But Manchester United need someone who has that X-factor and he has Flair. Someone like Judd Bellingham who leads the team forward.”
Jude Bellingham is believed to be close to joining Real Madrid from Borussia Dortmund this summer. Meanwhile, Manchester United have Bruno Fernandes to play in the No. 10 spot, with Christian Eriksen also able to fill the role.
Consequently, Mount may have to vie for a place in the starting line-up if he moves to Old Trafford.
