Stated that a nucleic acid testing center is now functioning at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the official said family members can provide samples for nucleic acid testing
In order to verify the identities of the bodies and ward off the fake claimants, the Odisha government on Monday started the procedure of DNA sampling in some questionable cases before handing over the remains to real relatives.
The decision was taken after two different families from Bhagalpur, Bihar state claimed that one dead body was that of their relative. The body was beyond recognition, badly mutilated and the face mutilated.
Unable to decide to whom the body should be turned over, the state government decided to make DNA sampling of the plaintiffs and make it a general procedure in such questionable cases.
We won’t turn over the body unless the DNA matches. We suspect that some people may be making false claims about the dead bodies due to the exorbitant compensation from the railways and the respective state governments.”
“Family members, relatives or friends who could not identify the deceased body in Balasore train accident can call 918280346629 for DNA sampling tests,” said another official at the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) Help Center.
A nucleic acid testing center is now functioning at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, the official said family members can provide samples for nucleic acid testing.
“Only if the DNA samples match will the body be handed over to the person who has been verified,” he said.
Meanwhile, the officials at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar came across an incident wherein a woman from Padamba district of Cuttack district made a claim of having a dead body.
She was found crying incessantly but when officials contacted the police in Padamba, they discovered that no one from the area had been traveling on any of the stricken trains.
“We decided to call the police, the woman has left, confirming our suspicions,” said an official of the medical institution.
Pictures and videos were also taken of relatives receiving the bodies of their relatives as a precaution to avoid disputes later.
Besides, chief secretary of the commission PK Gina said the government will also conduct DNA samples of unclaimed bodies before those bodies are cremated 72 hours after the accident.
According to the law, the government can cremate unclaimed bodies after 48 hours. But we are holding those for more time so that their families in different states can attend. In cases where relatives do not come to claim the bodies, we will cremate the bodies after preserving the DNA samples for future use, if any.”
