The Hague: Covid-19 remains a threat even though it is no longer a global health emergency, the European Union’s vaccine watchdog warned Tuesday in its latest report on the pandemic.
The European Medicines Agency (EMA) said it has suspended its regular briefings, which it has been closely watching for nearly three years to catch up on developments on much-needed punches and treatments.
But the Amsterdam-based regulator said it would continue its work on new variants of the disease that have killed millions and wreaked economic havoc.
“This virus will continue to be a threat, especially for the most vulnerable,” said EMA’s head of vaccines. Marco Cavalieri He said.
He said the virus “is still circulating and new variants are emerging.”
Public health authorities should “keep their guard up”, especially during the winter, Knights added.
But, he insisted, Covid vaccines kept people out of the hospital and “saved lives at the end of the day”.
Emer Cooke, Executive Director of EMA, praised her agency’s work in “enabling the largest vaccination program in European history”.
“It is estimated that in the first year of the pandemic alone, Covid vaccines helped save nearly 20 million lives,” she said.
The World Health Organization declared on May 5 that the COVID-19 pandemic no longer constitutes a global health emergency.
