Las Vegas authorities ruled that the death of UNLV defensive lineman Ryan Keeler was caused by heart disease. Keeler, 20, was found dead in his studio apartment on February 20.
According to autopsy reports, Keeler’s death was caused by a heart disorder known as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. The disorder causes the heart muscle to become so enlarged that it cannot relax and thus reduce the heart’s ability to pump blood.

Coroner’s office spokeswoman Stephanie Wheatley said Keeler’s death was the result of “a dysrhythmia caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy which is essentially a fatal arrhythmia due to thickening of the heart muscle.”
Keeler’s death, described as “tragic and premature” in a statement from the university, has been the subject of a police investigation. However, Officer Robert Weeks of the Las Vegas Police Department said Monday that the investigation is closed.

UNLV Rebels head coach Barry Odom announced the death of Ryan Keeler in February, describing him as an outstanding student and athlete.
In an interview with CBS 2’s Noel Brennan in February, Nazareth Academy coach Tim Rackey described Keeler as a tremendous talent with a big heart. Keeler helped Nazareth win the 2018 state title.
One of Keeler’s friends reportedly told police that before his death, Keeler was feeling nauseous and nauseous. Two UNLV coaches called into Keeler’s apartment on February 20 for a welfare check but received no response after repeatedly knocking on the door. One of the coaches kicked in the apartment door, and Keeler was found dead in his bed.
The Chicago-born defensive lineman moved to UNLV from Rutgers, New Jersey. Ryan Keeler attended Nazareth Academy in La Grange Park. As a redshirt freshman at UNLV, Keeler played in seven games. He was also on the Academic All-Mountain West Team with a 3.8 GPA.
