Vadodara residents driving on OP Road were in for a surprise Wednesday morning as the famous sculpture of a rock star with a guitar was missing from its usual spot at Diwalipura Junction. The sculpture, made from scrap metal and installed in 2017, was moved to Harney Sculpture Park in order to make room for a city-based foundation to spruce up the circuit around the theme of yoga.
According to officials of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC), the statue was removed from the site and moved to the sculpture on the intervening Wednesday night to make room for a new ‘facelift’ of the intersection. The officials added that the VMC has accepted a proposal from a city-based institution to renovate the circuit.
The Rockstar Circle was among the many scrap metal sculptures installed in the city in 2017. The change of installation came just a month after Shubhanginiraje Gaekwad, Rector of Maharaja Sayajirao University, criticized the metal sculptures at the “Reimaging Vadodara” symposium on May 1, which was organized by Balkrishna Shukla, Gujarat Government Chief Whip and MLA Raupura. In her letter, Gaekwad called the scrap metal statues “unaesthetic” and said that the VMC had “removed the beautiful fixtures representing Vadodara and replaced them with unattractive and unaesthetic scrap metal”.
