Palantir’s president, Alex Karp, is against the idea of a pause in AI research, in contrast open letter From the Future of Life Institute signed by some of the biggest names in the tech industry.

The letter also said that “if such a halt cannot be enacted quickly, governments must intervene and impose a moratorium”.
Speaking to BBC Radio in an interview broadcast on Thursday, Karp said he sees “many people who ask for a pause, ask for a pause because they don’t have a product.”
The reason for this, he added, without naming anyone, is that “people with nothing to offer want to study AI,” but by stopping, it could lead to robbing opponents not only in commercial applications, but also in military applications.
For him, “studying this and letting others win both in business areas and on the battlefield” is a really bad strategy.
When asked if what he wants is an “AI race” akin to the Cold War arms race, Karp simply states that “there’s already an AI arms race, we’re just ahead, (and) it’s not like we’ve slowed down, the IQ race is going to stop.” artificial.”
He noted that the “single most important event” in this race is not large language models like GPT-4, but instead how AI can be used in military applications.
