India’s all-rounder Shardul Thakur described the oval under preparation, saying it was very different from the surface they played on in 2021.
India won this game by 157 runs in September 2021 with Thakur taking fifty in each innings.
Thakur had two bad shots on Friday but still managed to score a crucial 51 points. He and Ajinkia Rahane shared a valuable 109-run stand to take India to 296 in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 469 in the final of the World Test Championship.
“The pitch is definitely different. The last time we played on the pitch we were doing something and everyone knew if there was cloud cover in England the ball moved.
“As the match progressed last time and the team started using the rollers, it became flat. But this time it wasn’t. I felt unprepared going into the match. As we saw yesterday and today, it was a bit up and down,” Shardoul said.
From one end, the ball sprinted from the length and the Australian bowlers took advantage of it effectively.
“If we saw yesterday’s play also the pitch changed a bit. The ball was solid and bounced of a strange length. With six wickets on the board it’s not a lot of running, under pressure yeah you could say the hardest hour although I’ve played a handful of the game but I felt Welcome to Test cricket.
“There’s an area where the ball comes in, and there’s so little grass around the notch and length that batsmen can’t leave deliveries easily. You have to play, stick because today we’ve seen a lot of balls down and I mean that’s an area of good length, I mean that’s a length Good and a little short.
“That’s the area where batsmen can’t see the ball and leave it right away. You have to play it. And if it bounces from there – good luck to the batsmen,” Thakur said. They get time to adjust.”
Thakur emphasized that India is still in a very good position despite trailing Australia by 296 runs.
“Cricket is a funny game. You never get the right total, especially in an ICC final. One good partnership and you can chase 450 or maybe more than that. We saw last year England chased 400 here and they didn’t lose many wickets.” It was all praise for Bet, who made a brave 89 in his Test return.
“Ajinkya is one of the best bowlers in the world. He’s scored runs in England, Australia and South Africa. He didn’t seem to be batting hard even though he wasn’t bowling (before he was dropped). Even today he was using all his batting experience in English conditions “.
