An 85-year-old man died in a fire in his apartment in a residential building in Dwarka district, southwest Delhi, officials said on Saturday.
A senior official said a phone call alerting the fire department about the fire which broke out on the seventh floor of Mas Flats in Dwarka Sector-10 was received at 8.26pm on Friday, after which nine firefighting bids were sent to the site.
At around 11.10pm, household items in Sadan Chandra’s apartment were reported to have caught fire and spread to the eighth floor, igniting curtains and an air-conditioning unit in an apartment there, the fire brigade said.
Chandra suffered burns and was taken to the Indira Gandhi Hospital by the police before the firefighting tenders arrived. Officials said he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
They said that the building consists of a ground floor and nine floors.
Police said they found that a fire suddenly broke out on the seventh floor.
After the fire is brought under control, the fire crew searches the flat and finds Chander inside. Police said he was immediately taken to IGI Hospital, Dwarka Sector 9, where the doctor pronounced him dead.
The Deputy Commissioner of Police (Dwarka) M. Harsha Vardhan said the deceased retired from PSU and was living with his daughter and son-in-law.
At the time of the fire, the other residents of the house had gone to the market.
