Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan on Saturday transferred 1,000 rupees to bank accounts of 1.25 crore women in the state – a total of Rs 1,209.64 crore – under the title ‘Mukhyamantri Ladli Behna Yojana’.
The prime minister pressed a button at an event at the Garrison Ground in Jabalpur to digitally transmit the first subsidy of the scheme, under which beneficiaries will receive Rs 1,000 per month. He also announced that he intended to increase the monthly stipend to 3,000 rupees in the coming years, which was seen as going against the promise of former Chief Minister and Congress leader Kamal Nath to give 1,500 rupees to women under the ‘Nari Saman Yojana’.
The Ladli Behna scheme, which BJP leaders claim will be a game-changer in the state where general assembly elections are likely to take place this year, was floated ahead of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s Vadra meeting in Jabalpur on Monday.
Directly targeting Kamal Nath, Chauhan said, “Kamal Nath stopped a lot of the policies you introduced. Our daughters were married off but not given money, they stopped giving laptops to our sons and daughters… All these schemes have started again… A scheme has started (to make here) an amount of Rs 1,000… I will continue to increase it… Then when the time comes, we will make a monthly payment of Rs 3,000 (per beneficiary).”
Kamal Nath has been routinely attacking Ladli Behna’s scheme, saying that in 18 years the BJP government in Parliament “has done nothing for women and remembers Ladli Behna (dead sister) when elections approach”. Kamal Nath also lashed out at the Chief Minister, calling him an ‘ad-making machine’ and claiming that he will not deliver on any of the promises.
CM Chouhan warned that Congress was making false allegations. “There are some people who make false promises day and night; they make false allegations against me. The intention of the Congress party is not right. It will not be able to do anything good for you sisters. You must be careful of these liars. If you want all these policies, you must To be with the BJP. You must support your brother (Chauhan) and you must support Modi ji.”
Chauhan also announced the formation of Ladli Behna Sena, which will consist of village level workers who will be registered to ensure smooth implementation of the programme. We will not remain poor. We will not cry, we will move forward. My mission in life is to improve the lives of my sisters… I want all my sisters to become lakhpati (millionaires), ”said the director of the center.
Chouhan launched Ladli Behna Yojana on March 5 this year on the occasion of his 65th birthday and Rs 8,000 crore has been made available for her in the 2023-24 budget.
Under the scheme, women in the 23-60 age group will be given Rs 1,000 per month subject to certain conditions, including that they are not income tax payers and their family’s annual income is less than Rs 2.5 lakh.
Women outnumber male voters in at least 18 of the 230 seats in parliament, including tribal-dominated areas such as Balaghat, Mandla, Dindori, Alirajpur and Jhabwa districts.
Moreover, the number of new female voters increased by 2.79 per cent, while it was 2.3 per cent for men, officials said, adding that out of the 13.39 lakh new voters in the state, 7.07 lakh are women.
