Officials on Friday announced that the University of Delhi will provide admission to PhD programs through the Common University Entrance Test (PhD) conducted by the National Examination Agency from the next academic year.

This will be the first time that the university will accept students into doctoral programs through a combined test rather than through written exams and interviews.

The decision was made during an executive board meeting, where a host of decisions were approved, including a five-year LLB program.

“The CUET (PhD)-2023 Ph.D. will be admitted on the recommendation of the Standing Committee of the Academic Council, after deliberations on various matters relating to the admission and attendance of undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programs for the academic session 2023-24, the same has been accepted by the Executive Council (EC) the university said in a statement.

Delhi University (DU) started accepting undergraduate programs through CUET-UG last year and will admit students into postgraduate programs through CUET PG.

The admission test will be through the National CUET (PhD) -2023 conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). However, officials confirmed that teaching and non-teaching class serving at the university can appear directly for interviews.

“Faculty and non-teaching staff members may be allowed to attend classes and take examinations without affecting the duties assigned to them during working hours. These PhD rules will apply from the academic session 2023-2024.”

Apart from these, the Eligibility Requirements and Seat Matrix Recommendations issued by the Medical Science Courses Admission Committee (MCAC) for admission into Undergraduate Courses (MBBS/BDS) for the 2023-2024 academic session have also been approved in the European Commission. Admission for MSc in Respiratory Therapy program will also be under CUET (PG)-2023.

Meanwhile, the decision to establish the Center for Independence and Division Studies, which was passed at the 1014 Academic Council meeting of the university, was approved on Friday.

Through research, this center will also work on such unsung heroes and events of the freedom movement, which have yet to find a place in history.

Besides, the events during the tragedy of partition of India will also be studied and researched in depth.

The formation of the Tribal Studies Center was also approved. It will be a multidisciplinary center with studies on different tribes in India. In addition to the above, the establishment of the Hindu Studies Center was also passed at the European Commission meeting. The Master of Arts program in Hindu Studies will commence under the Center for Hindu Studies.

It has also been approved to run the Integrated Teacher Education Program (ITEP) course from the 2023-24 academic session.

The university said that this course will be of four years duration as a pilot project.

DO’s Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Mahila College, Mata Sundari Mahila Mahavidyalaya College and Jesus and Mary College have been granted ITEP approval by NCTE of session 2023-2024.

DU’s Department of Education and eight colleges running the B El Ed course will apply to the ITEP course for the 2024-2025 academic year.
