The biggest challenge that has surfaced after the bodies were recovered from the site of the train accident at Balasore in Odisha, is their identification. It was important to claim the bodies and hand them over to the families as soon as possible. But it wasn’t easy.
Many of these bodies were in poor condition – mutilated, parts missing while others were just left. But the Ministries of Communications, Electronics and Information Technology, chief officials of railways, e-cell, government officials and UIDAI officials among others got together and found a solution: artificial intelligence. Experts in the field were called in to assess the situation.
First, the Adar Card experts were taken to the site where the bodies were kept; They took fingerprints from the left thumb of the corpse. In addition, a SIM card triangulation system was used. As a result, the identification process was linked to the Sanchar Sathi system. At least 65 bodies have been fingerprinted.
But since in many cases the skin of the fingers is damaged, it is not possible to verify the identity through the Aadhaar card. Later, this process was added to Sanchar Saathi, which is an artificial intelligence based system, through which your identity is known on the basis of mobile phone connection.
The system was launched by Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnau a few days ago, as the phone number of the accident victim was known through the image. In addition, complete information related to Aadhaar Card has been revealed. The identity of 44 bodies was verified through this process. Even their home addresses and family phone numbers have been found.

The same method was previously used to identify fake pre-registered SIM cards. Nearly 52,000 fake SIM cards were blocked in Odisha in May.
The next method used was SIM triangulation. That way, officials tracked down phones that were active just before the accident and turned off or became inactive soon after, said one expert.
