When captain Pat Cummins was dismissed in Session Two of Day Four of the 2023 World Championship Final by Mohamed El Shami, Australia had no reason to bat anymore. With a lead of 443, Cummins and Co declared their second innings and set a daunting task for India in their fourth innings.
Never at The Oval have so many runs been scored in the fourth innings. The highest is 429/8, from the Indian team that toured in 1979. The highest successful chase is 263. With the odds against India leaning, former Australian captain Matthew Hayden believes that if this is done, the world’s largest city will be too young to celebrate Historic victory.
“London will not be big enough, if this becomes a reality for the India team,” Hayden said on the ICC radio broadcast before India’s fourth innings.
Earlier in the third day, Australia had restarted their innings at 123/4, with Marnus Labuschagne and Cameron Green in the middle.
Umesh Yadav would provide India with their first breakthrough as Labushagne slammed into Chtishwar Pujara in Zlat. Later in the session, Ravindra Jadeja was batting while Cameron Green was being brushed off after he decided to slow a delivery that turned from his pads to clip the stumps behind her.
Alex Carey (66*) would add 93 for the seventh wicket with Mitchell Stark (41) before the latter was picked by Mohammed Shami followed by Cummins’ dismissal and announcement.
