Sheela Rani Das, 53, became the talk of the town after she cleared her Madhyamick (Grade 10) exams on July 6. Her two daughters, Rajashree and Jayashree, passed their Senior Secondary or Class 12 exams around the same time.

Sheela Rani says her daughters persuaded her to take the exams.

Talking to India’s bestShe remembers how she started working at the age of 18 to support her family and her three sisters.

My family was not very well off, and since we had four children, I had to stop my education early. I started working at the age of 18 as an employee of the Agartala Municipal Corporation where I continue to work today. I have appeared for the board exams several times but could not pass them. This time, with the help of my daughters, I managed to get through.”

Since she is always working on her mind, she cannot give the required time for her education. She remembers a few times when she took the exam, but couldn’t clear it.

I took the exam in 1994 for the first time. After that, several attempts took a toll on my life. I lost my father before one attempt, and then my husband died in 2012 when I was planning to take the exam. This time, it’s all thanks to my daughters, who pushed me to take the exams,” says Sheila.

Like her mother, 26-year-old Rajashree had to drop her studies to get married. She took the Class 10 exams with her younger sister in 2020, and then Class 12 this year.

Help your parents continue their studies

Jayashree, the youngest daughter, was her mother’s constant support.

“I feel so happy that my mum and two of us passed the exams together. She wasn’t ready at first to take the exams but I told her she could. I’m so glad she cleared it. Now is the time to support our mum, she has supported us all our lives,” says Jayashree.

She hopes more people will help their parents continue their studies.

“If every child inspires their parents to complete their education, thousands of shilas will pass the exam. They are just afraid, we need to give them support and morale. Remember, a can-do attitude will overcome your fears,” adds Jayashree.

Sheila also has a message for others like her, who may fear taking exams.

“If I can do it, so can you. Conquer your fears, and you will surely pass. You can achieve your dreams by working hard. There is no age for doing anything, you can take your exams or achieve any dream at any age,” Sheila says.
