Manchester City’s backup goalkeeper Scott Carson became a two-time UEFA Champions League winner after the Cityzens beat Inter Milan in this season’s final 1-0.

Carson won it in the 2004-05 season with Liverpool. The Reds defeated Milan on penalties after a thrilling 120 minutes that ended 3-3. However, Carson did not play a single minute in any of those finals.

Jerzy Dudek was in goal for Liverpool in the 2004-05 encounter. Ederson Moraes was among the sticks for City in this season’s final. By coincidence, Carson’s Champions League victory came at Istanbul’s famous Ataturk Stadium.

Carson is also the player with the longest gap between two wins in the UEFA Champions League alongside Milan’s legendary defensive duo Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta. All three players won it after 18 years, a competition record.

Scott Carson is equal with Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta for the longest gap between first and last Champions League victory as a player (18 years, 1989-2007, 2005-2023).

On the other hand, Manchester City won the Champions League for the first time in its history. They also won the FA Cup and the Premier League. Pep Guardiola’s side became the first English team since Manchester United in 1999 to win the European treble. It was truly a record breaking season for the Cityzens.

Winning the Champions League wouldn’t be Scott Carson’s last win at Manchester City

Scott Carson has so far made only two appearances for the Manchester City first team. He has kept a clean sheet for the club as well. The 37-year-old has not appeared once this season.

However, the veteran goalkeeper would still play a role in the club’s future. He recently extended his contract for another season with Citizens. Speaking about the deal, Carson said (via the official Manchester City website):

“I’m excited to stay at City for the 2023/24 season. I love working with Pep, Xabi Mancisidor and our great players every day. I hope I can help all our goalkeepers be the best they can be.”

Txiki Begiristain said of the now two-time Champions League winner:

“Scott is a real asset to our team and enjoys a close working relationship with the goalkeepers and coaches. We are very pleased that he has signed a contract extension. I look forward to seeing him support his teammates and train well to make sure he is ready to perform on the pitch when called upon.”

With Ederson Moraes and Stefan Ortega Moreno in the squad, Scott Carson’s first team opportunities could be difficult. However, Manchester City clearly value player experience.
