Former India player Gautam Gambhir opened up about his relationship with Virat Kohli after the recent altercation between the two in the Indian Premier League in this edition.

“My relationship with MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli is the same. If we have a falling out, it just stays on the field, not off the field. Nothing personal. They want to win as much as I do,” he said in an interview with News 18.

Last month, Kohli, who represents Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gambhir, a mentor to the Lucknow Super Giants team, were seen exchanging words and had to be separated between two groups of players, including RCB captain Faf du Plessis and his LSG counterpart KL Rahul.

The incident appeared to have arisen after what appeared to be an in-game skating involving Kohli and Navin-ul-Haq of Lucknow when the latter came to bat during the chase. After RCB won an emotionally charged contest, the players had to be separated after a conversation during a handshake took an ugly turn.

In an interview with News18, Gambhir also said that India was not a team obsessed country but a people obsessed nation.

“Our country is not obsessed with the team but rather a country obsessed with the individual. We believe that some individuals will be bigger than the team. In other countries like England, New Zealand and Australia, the team is bigger than any individual. Unfortunately, the stakeholders in Indian cricket, from broadcasters to The media, to PR agencies. They’ll only show 3 people all day. If you get 50 and you also get 50, if you keep showing one person, everyone will think he’s the only star. The other person will be called underrated.

“Who makes a player underestimated? Broadcasters do, experts do, social media does. If you only talk about one player’s performance, the other is automatically underestimated. Both are equally grafted on, but if one’s performance isn’t appreciated, it will always be undervalued.” This obsession with people is the reason why India has not won a major ICC title for a long time.”
