It was a history-making day for Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola as he led the Premier League side to their first ever UEFA Champions League glory. Citizens beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the final at Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey.
Rodri scored the only goal of the match in the 68th minute. City won the treble as they were Premier League and FA Cup champions in 2022-23 heading into the Champions League final.
The Spanish coach became the first coach to win the treble twice in his career. He previously did that with Barcelona in the 2008-09 season. Guardiola won the treble with two different teams, which makes his feat all the more convincing.
The Spaniard also became the sixth coach to win the Champions League with two different teams as a coach. Jose Mourinho (Porto and Inter Milan), Jupp Heynckes (Bayern Munich and Real Madrid), Carlo Ancelotti (Milan and Real Madrid), Ernst Abel (Hamburg and Feyenoord), Ottmar Hitzfeld (Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund) are the others. It wasn’t our best performance. I don’t have any energy to think about next season and we need a break.” “We will start from scratch and this is our mission. Winning the treble is very difficult.”
Manchester City became the first English team since Manchester United in 1998-1999 to win the European treble. They’ve had an amazing group of solid core players over the past few years. The team finally maximized their potential.
