The cyclone intensified into a “very severe cyclonic storm” and is likely to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15.

Union Home Minister Ajay Bhalla on Sunday reviewed the readiness of various wings of the central government and the Gujarat state administration to deal with the impending cyclone Pebarjoy, officials said.

The cyclone intensified into a “very severe cyclonic storm” and is likely to make landfall between the Kutch district of Gujarat and Karachi in Pakistan on June 15.

A spokesperson for the ministry said the Union Home Minister chaired a meeting of the National Executive Committee to review the readiness of central ministries, agencies and the Gujarat state government to deal with the impending cyclone.

According to the Disaster Management Law, the National Executive Committee is responsible for implementing various policies and plans related to disaster management in the country.

Sufficient numbers of teams and assets of the National Disaster Response Force, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard are being deployed to assist the Government of Gujarat in its preparedness, rescue and recovery efforts.

The spokesman said the Gujarat government had taken all precautionary measures to deal with Cyclone Pebarjoy and was ready to restore services after the cyclone made landfall.

The meeting was attended by the Secretary General of Gujarat and senior officials of central ministries and agencies such as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).
