The Man of the Match award for Saturday’s Champions League Final was awarded to Manchester City midfielder Rodri. The Spain international scored the only goal of the game as City beat Inter Milan to win their first UEFA Champions League.

Rodri’s overall game plan and presence in midfield, which played a vital role in City’s victory, were praised by UEFA’s Technical Monitoring Committee. The committee was quoted as saying (via the UEFA website):

“He came in with the winning goal in a tight game, and his combination with City between the boxes was essential for a well-balanced team.”

Rodri’s second-half goal saw City win a close encounter against Inter. Bernando Silva from the right flanked the Spanish midfielder, who fired the ball past Inter goalkeeper Andre Onana to score in the 68th minute.

Rodri was also the main midfielder for Manchester City. The former Atletico Madrid star completed 61 of 66 attempts and passing with 92% accuracy. He had 80 touches and made 12 passes into the final third to open up the Inter Milan defence.

Rodri also performed his defensive duties, making three interceptions and recovering the ball nine times. The man of the match admitted that he was not at his best in the first half. However, the 26-year-old seemed happy with his goal and wants to achieve more with the club (via EuroFoot on Twitter):

“I wasn’t very good in the first half, I was playing honest…then I scored. Unbelievable. I think we made history, and the good thing is we want more.”

Manchester City completed a historic treble after winning the UEFA Champions League

Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City became only the second English team to win the treble after winning the Champions League. City rivals Manchester United are the only other English team to do so (1998-99).

Manchester City secured its first title this season by winning the English Premier League, after a close competition for the title with Arsenal. They then beat United in the FA Cup Final 2-1 to secure the domestic double before winning the Champions League.

The only trophy City have not won this season is the Carabao Cup. They were knocked out of the competition in the quarter-finals, losing 2-0 to Southampton.
