The President of the Akali Dal, Harchand Singh Longowal, has sent his response to the Home Minister, PC Sethi’s fresh call to resume talks to resolve the outstanding Punjab issue. He had requested further clarifications from the Minister of Interior regarding the party’s demands. It is believed that the Akali leadership is not satisfied with the new Sethi call in which the latter only mentioned the matter of land and water to be discussed with the Akali leaders.

Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and Finnish President Mauno Koivisto have expressed grave concern over the failure of the major powers to reach any agreement on arms control. During an hour-long meeting, the two leaders reviewed the international situation, with special reference to the dangerous consequences of the buildup of nuclear weapons. The Finnish president described this year as a critical period if no agreement was reached between the nuclear powers in Madrid and Geneva.

Indian industrialist, G.D. Birla, died in London of a heart attack. Birla, 90, had just gone out on his usual morning walk with one of his assistants. On the way, he complained of chest problems. A passing taxi was stopped and he was taken to his residence in Park Tower. An ambulance was also called.
