As Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’ intensified, Mumbai along with other coastal parts of Maharashtra received rain and strong winds Sunday night.

Air India Monday morning said in a tweet that some flights had been delayed and canceled as a result of the temporary closure of a runway at Mumbai airport due to “bad weather”.

Strong winds also affected air quality and visibility due to dust particles. The PTI news agency quoted a civilian official as saying that some trees fell in parts of Mumbai due to the strong winds.

In a tweet on Monday morning, Air India said, “Extreme weather conditions and temporary closure of runway 09/27 at Mumbai Airport, along with other consequential factors beyond our control, have resulted in delays and cancellations of some of our flights. We are sorry for the inconvenience caused to our guests, as we make every effort to We do our best to minimize disruptions.”

Mumbai has also been hit by tsunamis due to Cyclone Pebarjoy, which is likely to make landfall in Kutch, Gujarat state but is already showing its impact in western Maharashtra.

Tourists were surprised by huge waves in the town of Ganpatipuli in the coastal district of Ratnagiri. The waves hit the beach with a strong current, which frightened the tourists. No serious injuries were reported in the accident.

Early Monday morning visuals from India Gate in Mumbai also showed high waves and tides caused by Cyclone Peparjoy.
