Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has criticized the Indian team management for not playing veteran Ravichandran Ashwin in the WTC final against Australia at The Oval.

In his Midday column on Monday, Gavaskar wrote about the number of left-handers in Australia and what kind of impact Ashwin could have had with his incredible record against them.

Sunil Gavaskar also highlighted how this did not happen for the first time with Ravichandran Ashwin as the India team sat him in such circumstances despite being the current number one Test bowler.

Gavaskar wrote:

“No other first-class Indian cricketer in modern times has been treated as baffled as Ashwin. Tell me if there had been a No. 1 cricketer in the team, would he have been left out for the playing XI. Because in earlier times he would not have bowled.” On grass or if he doesn’t score runs on a dry, easy-to-spin field?

“In the case of Ashwin, although he is the No. 1 player, he is not always the first spinner to be brought in.”

Sunil Gavaskar on sacking of Cheteshwar Pujara

Sunil Gavaskar has been disappointed with the manner in which he dismissed veteran batsman Chiteshwar Pujara in the second game of the World Tennis Championships final. Pujara attempted a top-cut against Pat Cummins, but it only ended up falling back to the wicket-keeper.

Gavaskar questioned Pujara’s choice of bowling, especially when India had just lost the wicket of captain Rohit Sharma. He said:

“It’s hard to understand why Pujara would attempt a downhill shot as this is not a shot he uses regularly. Even trying it twice after Rohit was out, it was also questioning thinking at the time. Pujara is known for his patience and willingness to take blows, but he kept occupying the crease, so why on earth was he looking about playing that shot when running was not the need but keeping wicket was necessary.”

It will be interesting to see if the India team continues with Chieshwar Pujara’s third-place finish in the next Test series against the West Indies in July.
