Dustin Johnson had a very positive outlook on the recent LIV Golf x PGA Tour merger. The alliance came as a shock to the golf world, including the professional golfers themselves. However, as a new golf entity is poised to come into the picture soon, most pros are looking at the bigger picture.
With the new merger also came a lot of speculation. Many wondered if the LIV Golf Series would continue to exist even after the alliance took place. However, Dustin Johnson is confident that the golf world will see LIV through 2024 with a full 14-tournament calendar. Speaking about the merger, he said:
“As far as I know LIV is going into 2024 and they’re doing the schedule now. That’s the plan but I can’t really answer more than that. I mean I’ve talked to the guys but yeah, so far as I know it’s going to be 2024 and it’s going to be a full schedule like we did this year.”
Dustin Johnson said he spoke to the head of the Public Investment Fund himself, Yasser Al-Rumayyan, about the LIV Golf that is in the future. Dustin Johnson also said he looks forward to collaborating with the PGA Tour and playing golf with the greats of the sport.
“I just hope we can get the best players to play at the same time in golf tournaments. Obviously it’s a little bit divided now, but the PGA Tour has great events and the LIV has great events and it would be fun and exciting to have everyone play together.”
On the other hand, PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan said the board has not yet reached a final conclusion about the existence of LIV Golf in the future. The overall goal of the Inter-Tour Compact is primarily to develop the game of golf in the long term.
We are in a framework agreement. We haven’t made the final deal. I haven’t had a chance to do a comprehensive empirical evaluation. I don’t want to make any statements or make any predictions.”
