A young couple, shortly after getting married, was discovered dead in the bathroom of their home in Bengaluru’s Chikkagala district on June 10. Police suspect the couple died after inhaling carbon monoxide from the gas heater that was installed.

The two victims have been identified as Chandrashekhar M, 30, and Sudharani Penny, 22. Both were working in a luxury resort near Nandi Hills. Chandrashekhar had rented a house owned by a police officer in Tarabanahalli, about 10 kilometers from Kempegowda International Airport.

The incident came to light on Sunday night when the homeowner knocked on their door and, when they did not respond, alerted the police to the emergency helpline number. The police broke down the door and found the couple dead.

Chandrashekhar and Sudharani were in a relationship and were planning to marry, with the support of their families. On June 10, around 6 pm, the couple arrived home to spend some time together. After a few hours, they decided to take a shower and turn on the heater in the bathroom, which is a 7.5 liter gas heater attached to an LPG cylinder.

The exact sequence of events remains unclear, but evidence points to a geyser malfunctioning, releasing carbon monoxide. A locked bathroom door and window proved fatal as the couple inadvertently inhaled the toxic fumes. A police officer said they lost consciousness and eventually succumbed to the fumes.

Chandrashekar was from Gundlupet taluk in Chamarajanagar district of the state and Sudharani belonged to Gokak taluk in Belagavi district.

In gas heaters, partial combustion takes place emitting carbon monoxide which is odorless and colorless. If a leak occurs, users may not notice it. A police officer explained that if the bathroom in which it is installed does not have adequate outlets or vents, it is dangerous.
