During the 2002 Godhra riots, 14 people were killed in a bakery in Vadodara. A total of 21 people have been charged with murder in this case. The Gujarat District Court acquitted all of them in this case. In order to ensure a fair trial, the Supreme Court has referred this case to the state of Maharashtra.

The Mumbai Sessions Court on Tuesday acquitted two defendants in the 2002 Best Bakery case in Gujarat. During the 2002 Godhra riots, 14 people were killed in a bakery in Vadodara.

A total of 21 people have been charged with murder in this case. The Gujarat District Court acquitted all of them in this case. In order to ensure a fair trial, the Supreme Court has referred this case to the state of Maharashtra.

In 2006, a Mumbai court convicted nine people of several counts including murder, and sentenced them to life imprisonment. In 2012, the Bombay High Court acquitted five of the nine accused, with the sentence handed down to four of them confirmed.

However, when the other accused were facing trial in a communal riot case, two of the accused – Harshad Solanki and Mafat Gohil – were running away.

A separate trial has begun for them. They appeared before the Sessions Court in 2013, and their trial began in 2019.
