Thiruvananthapuram to host 2-3 World Cup 2023 matches: Reports

[ad_1]

The Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala state, may get approval to host two or three matches of the upcoming 2023 ODI Cricket World Cup in India in October and November.

According to reports from The Times of India, Greenfield Stadium is set to host a few more matches of the super event. While it may not get any match India to play, hosting other matches of the tournament would still be a huge feat for a stadium that has hosted five international matches so far.

Here is what a source closest to the developments told TOI:

“When the ICC officially announces the FIFA World Cup schedule, the name Thiruvananthapuram should appear in it. However, it is unlikely that they (Thiruvananthapuram) will get any matches involving India. Sri Lanka may play there and there may be two more matches as well. .”

The KCA President is waiting for the official confirmation about the BCCI World Cup matches

Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) President and former Joint Secretary of BCCI Jayesh George told TOI that while they have asked BCCI to consider Greenfield Stadium to host some games, they are still awaiting official confirmation as the schedule hasn’t been announced yet. .

“It is true that we have asked BCCI to consider Thiruvananthapuram as a venue for the World Cup. We hope to get some matches too. However, we are still waiting for official confirmation from BCCI and ICC.”

One would think that, given that George was the former joint secretary of the BCCI, it would be possible that the board would trust the KCA to be a world-class venue for the final event later this year.

According to reports, the facilities of Greenfield Stadium have been praised by many former and current players as well as commentators, and this should certainly help them gain recognition. The official schedule will likely be announced soon.
