The iconic Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in Delhi’s Teen Murti Bhavan complex was renamed the “Prime Minister’s Museum and Library” on Friday to celebrate India’s 75 years of independence. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, Vice President of the NMML Association, approved the new name in a private meeting.
Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) is an independent institution fully funded by the Ministry of Culture. It is a leading institution for research on Indian history and society in the modern and contemporary period, located within the Teen Murti Complex in Delhi.
Designed by Robert Tor Russell and built in 1929-30 as part of Edwin Lutyens’ Imperial Capital. After independence, on the 75th birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru on November 14, 1964, the museum was inaugurated by then President S. Radhakrishnan.
After the museum, the library was constructed in the year 1966 and officially inaugurated in the year 1974. Initially, the library was constructed in the west wing and the museum in the east wing of Teen Murti Bhavan but in view of the rapid growth of research materials, a new library building was constructed and inaugurated by the then President VV Giri in 1974.
An annex building was completed in 1989 to store more research materials. Subsequently in 1990, the Center for Contemporary Studies was established within the building.
On April 1, 1966, the central government set up the Nehru Memorial Museum and Society to manage the institution, registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860. At present, the association has 29 members. On 6 February 1984, the Nehru Planetarium was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi within the premises of the Teen Murti Bhavan.
In 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi floated the idea of creating a museum dedicated to all the Prime Ministers of India. The NMML Executive Board approved the construction of a museum for all the Chief Ministers at the Teen Murti Complex on 11 November 2016.
The Prime Minister’s Museum building was completed after four years in 2022 and Prime Minister Modi inaugurated the building on April 21 of the same year.
How did Tin Murti Bhavan become a Nehru memorial?
Earlier, Teen Murti Bhavan was the official residence of the British Commander-in-Chief in India. But after India’s independence, when the last chief left in 1948, it became the official residence of Nehru. He lived there for 16 years, until his death.
It became the Nehru Memorial Museum where Radhakrishnan dedicated the Teen Murti Bhavan to the nation on the 75th birth anniversary of Nehru on 14 November 1964.
According to former NMML director Shakti Sinha, on 9 August 1968 the union cabinet decided that the building should once again be home to the Prime Ministers of India. But this did not happen and it was agreed to turn it into a memorial to Nehru.
Legacy of Congress, Nehru-Gandhi Family
The Grand Old Party Congress Nehru Memorial Museum is an important legacy of the Nehru-Gandhi family. The Teen Murti complex, where the museum is located, shows Nehru’s tenure as PM. He promotes his ideas and values.
On 1 April 1966, Indira Gandhi established the Nehru Memorial Museum and Society to manage the institution and inaugurated the Nehru Planetarium. Also during the UPA regime, former Congress President Sonia Gandhi served as President of the NMML Association.
At Amrit Kal, a museum of all 14 prime ministers from Nehru to Modi
According to the government, the Teen Murti property epitomizes the continuity story. It has been built to honor the contributions of all 14 Prime Ministers of India since independence. The building is a narrative record of how each Prime Minister contributed to the development of the nation over a period of 75 years. It reflects the history of collective effort, which has come from every class and stratum of society, for the success of democracy in India.
While inaugurating the museum, Modi said, “Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya opens doors of knowledge, ideas and experience for future generations. Facing challenges, every Chief Minister has tried to take the country forward. These are all objects of public memory. If the youth and future generations know about the Chief Ministers, they will get inspiration.” .
