Islamabad: Al-Hakam Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) on the chosen Friday Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif as party chief while Maryam Nawaz He was selected as the first vice president.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the General Council of the PML-N, which also selected a number of office officials, including Ahsan Iqbal as general secretary.
Among the other party leaders, Marium Aurangzeb was chosen as information secretary, Ataullah Tarar as deputy secretary, and Ishaq Dar as minister of finance and foreign affairs.
The election was uncontested, apparently indicating a show of unity within the PML-N, but in fact indicative of the iron grip of the Sharif family members who picked off virtually every office holder in the party.
Shahbaz was elevated in 2018 to take over the reins of the party after his elder brother and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was first disqualified as prime minister and later banned by the country’s supreme court to lead the party as president.
It is believed that Nawaz Sharif, who has been living in London since 2019 when he went there for treatment, is actually calling the shots at PML-N by working in the shadows and every decision in the party is taken with his approval.
Insiders say he makes senior appointments in the government and was instrumental in promoting Ishaq Dar as finance minister last year from Miftah Ismail.
Prime Minister Shahbaz spoke after the elections as President of his earnest desire to act as a “soldier” for his older brother who he said would return before the elections to lead the party.
“The political and economic landscape of the country will witness a great change once he (Nawaz) returns to Pakistan,” he said.
The prime minister spoke about the economic challenges and efforts to meet the conditions of the International Monetary Fund for a non-performing loan and said the effort is aimed at reaching a “short-term agreement” with the global lender.
He also praised Dar for improving the economic conditions of the cash-strapped country.
Maryam Nawaz, who is considered the true heir of Nawaz Sharif, said in her speech that Shahbaz did not take any decision without consulting his brother, highlighting their close partnership and the all-encompassing role of the exiled former prime minister.
It also condemned the May 9 violence and said those responsible would be punished.
