PM Modi will lead a yoga session at the United Nations Secretariat on June 21 to celebrate the International Day of Yoga

UN General Assembly President Chapa Kurosi is set to join Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the 9th International Day of Yoga celebrations at UN Headquarters in New York next week.

“I look forward to participating in the celebrations of the 9th UN International Day of Yoga with Prime Minister @NarendraModi at UN Headquarters on the North Lawn next week,” the UN General Assembly president wrote on Twitter.

The Prime Minister’s participation in the Yoga Day celebration is part of his much-anticipated visit to the United States from June 21.

On Tuesday, the UN Resident Coordinator in India, Shumbi Sharp, said that Prime Minister Modi will lead a yoga session at the UN Secretariat on June 21 to mark the International Day of Yoga.

Interacting with PTI on the sidelines of a symposium held here to celebrate 75 years of UN peacekeeping operations, he also said since 2015, “The world has truly embraced International Yoga Day.”

Acknowledging its global appeal, in December 2014, the United Nations declared June 21 as International Yoga Day by resolution. The day aims to raise awareness around the world of the many benefits of practicing yoga.

“Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi will lead a yoga session at the United Nations, in the General Secretariat, on June 21,” Sharp said.

The General Secretariat performs the substantive and administrative business of the United Nations as directed by the General Assembly, the Security Council and other organs.

Everyone understood and 175 member states signed on very quickly. It’s one of those popular international days, and it really captures a lot of things. It’s about mindfulness and mental health.”

He said yoga has helped people during difficult times like the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yoga is about staying fit and staying relaxed, Sharp said, and “International Yoga Day has resonated with the international community.”

He added that Prime Minister Modi’s presence at the United Nations would be “special”.

The draft resolution establishing the International Day of Yoga was proposed by India and supported by 175 member states, according to the United Nations website.

The proposal was first introduced by PM Modi.

During his speech at the opening of the 69th session of the General Assembly, he said: “Yoga is an invaluable gift from our ancient traditions. Yoga embodies the unity of mind, body, thought and action…”
