An official at Wagle Estate Police Station said the rickshaw driver was furious that he had not yet been given a license due to a case registered against his name.

An official said a 42-year-old auto-rickshaw driver attempted suicide in front of Maharashtra Chief Minister Ainath Shinde’s house in Thane on Saturday morning, but his attempt was thwarted by police personnel on the scene.

The official said Vinay Pandey doused himself with kerosene but was overpowered and immobilized while trying to set himself on fire.

A Wagle State Police Station official said the rickshaw driver was angry because he had not yet obtained a license due to a case filed against his name.

The official added that the police are talking to him as part of the investigation.

Meanwhile, a video of the accident, in which the driver can be seen and heard screaming at the top of his lungs, has gone viral on social media.

Police were informed that the prime minister was not at home at the time of the accident.
