New Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly asked the club not to accept any offers for Levi Colwell.

The 20-year-old is considered one of the best English midfielders in his age group. He spent last season on loan at Brighton & Hove Albion, making 24 appearances across competitions.

It is said that the gulls are intent on keeping him after the summer. Last month, manager Roberto De Zerbi said in a press conference (as reported by SportsMole):

“I hope Levy plays for us next year, but that’s Chelsea’s decision. We have to be ready to change some players, but he’s a big player for us.”

According to HITC, Chelsea want to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton and realize including Colwill in the deal could help them get their man. However, according to The Guardian, Pochettino intends to keep the English centre-back at Stamford Bridge at any cost.

Colwell is a left-footed centre-back – a position rapidly gaining importance in modern football. The 6′ 2″ Englishman is strong in the air and in the duel and also has the skill to tackle the ball from behind.

Colwell is still in his formative years, so with the right training, he could develop into one of the best central defenders around. It remains to be seen if Pochettino can give him meaningful playing time this season.

The Blues have Wesley Fofana, Trivoh Chaluba, Kalidou Koulibaly, Benoit Badiachella, Thiago Silva and Cesar Azpilicueta as their options for this position. Colwill has been on Blues’ books since 2011 but has yet to make his debut. His contract at Stamford Bridge expires in 2025.

What did Levi Colwell say about his future with Chelsea?

Levi Colwell has thanked Brighton & Hove Albion for taking a chance on him and allowing him to be involved in their successful Premier League campaign.

He told Athletic (via Metro) about his future at Amex and if he sees himself at Chelsea next season:

“Brighton have done a lot for me. They put their faith in me when others haven’t, and I’m someone who likes to pay for that. We’ll see. I don’t know what will happen (at Chelsea). I’m still here until the end of the season.”

Finishing sixth in the standings, Brighton secured the UEFA Europa League next season. Meanwhile, the Blues finished six places below them. This is Seagulls’ best result on the top flight.
