Gujarat saw heavy rains in the 24 hours ending Friday morning as Cyclone Biparjoy hit Kutch and coastal districts of Devbhumi Dwarka, Banaskantha, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar and Morbi, along with the northern district of Banaskantha.

Also on Friday, Kutch, Jamnagar and Devbhumi Dwarka received another spell of heavy rain.
Gandhiham district of Kutch witnessed the highest rainfall of 198 mm in the last 24 hours ending Friday morning. Other talukas of Kutch like Bhuj (153mm), Anjar (127mm), Mandra (125mm), Mandvi (64mm), Bachau (61mm) and Nakatrana (42mm) also received heavy rains.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, most places in Gujarat are expected to receive “light to moderate rain,” while “heavy to very heavy” rain is expected in isolated places in Saurashtra and Kutch on Saturday as well. “Heavy to very heavy rains very likely over North Gujarat region on June 16 and over North Gujarat region on June 17 as the severe cyclonic storm is very likely to move in approximately eastern and northeastern wards and further weaken into a deep depression over Saurashtra and Kutch at about on the evening of June 16,” the meteorological department stated.

“After landfall, the system moved northeastward, gradually weakening into a severe cyclonic storm and likely to maintain cyclonic storm intensity until the afternoon of June 16, after which, it will gradually weaken and turn into a deep depression in the evening,” according to Hurricane IMD reported. IMD has issued a wind warning along and off the coasts of Saurashtra and Kutch (Districts of Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Rajkot, Junagarh and Morbi), including the Bay of Kutch as “gale wind speeds of 75-85 kmph at speeds up to gusts of 60-70 kmph to 80 kmph are likely to prevail over the northern regions of Saurashtra and 50-60 kmph to 70 kmph in the The watch is over the southern regions of Saurashtra.”

IMD added that the hurricane is likely to become severe as winds reach 50-60 km/h and gusts up to 70 km/h from June 16 until midnight over the aforementioned areas.

Heavy rains knocked out 171 talukas out of a total of 255 in the state Thursday and early Friday morning.

Within 10 hours between 6am and 4pm, Anjar (159mm), Gandhiham (128mm), Mandvi (122mm), Bhoj (119mm), Mundra (117mm), Bhichao (114mm) and Rapar (79mm ) mm) in Kutch received heavy rainfall.
