Shortly after an earthquake of greater magnitude struck the region, another earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred near the Indo-China border at 9.55pm within just 15 minutes of the previous one.
Five moderate-intensity earthquakes have hit Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh region within the past 24 hours, with the highest being the 4.5-magnitude earthquake that hit Ladakh on Saturday at 9.44pm.
The earthquake department said that a 4.5-magnitude earthquake jolted the union territory of Ladakh on Saturday. While no injuries were reported, the earthquake was felt at 9.44 pm and the epicenter was 271 km northeast of Leh.
The depth of the quake was 10 kilometers below the surface, at 35.74 degrees north latitude and 79.84 degrees east longitude.
The first earthquake that hit Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday had a magnitude of 3.0 and was felt at 2.03 in the afternoon. The epicenter was in the hilly Ramban district along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
The depth of the quake was reported to be five kilometers below the surface at 33.31 degrees north latitude and 75.19 degrees east longitude.
The second earthquake struck 271 km northeast of Leh in Ladakh, with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale around 9:44 pm, the highest ever.
Soon after an earthquake of greater magnitude hit the region, another earthquake of magnitude 4.4 occurred near the Indo-China border at 9.55pm within just 15 minutes of the previous one. The epicenter of the earthquake was in the Doda district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Early Sunday, another 4.1-magnitude earthquake hit the region again with its epicenter near the Indo-China border, 295 kilometers northeast of Leh district.
Meanwhile, the fifth and latest earthquake was registered near Katra in Jammu and Kashmir. The shell hit 80 km east of Katra at 3:50 am at a depth of 11 km.
