After weeks of bashing the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for monopolizing the television broadcasting rights of Gurbani from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the Punjab government on Sunday said it would introduce an amendment to the Gurdwara Act of 1925 that would free up television broadcasting rights for the Gurbani.

Prime Minister Bhagwant Mann, Sunday, tweeted the announcement ahead of the special session of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Monday. Mann said that in the next assembly session an amendment would be introduced in the Gurdwara Act 1925 so that the broadcasting rights of Gurbani could be freed from the Golden Temple. No bid will be required to grant permission for Ghorbani’s live broadcast from the Golden Temple.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) Harjinder Singh Dhami in a tweet warned the PM that the Sikh Gurdwara Act of 1925 is a central law. He told the Cabinet that he was talking about adding a section to the law by introducing an amendment but he was not aware of the amendment being made. He said this could be done by the center in Lok Sabha after consultation with the SGPC.
