According to state government officials, more than 1.11 electric poles of Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd, a government-owned power distribution company in Saurashtra and Kutch districts, have been damaged by Cyclone Biparjoy and 3,400 villages have lost power.

Cyclone Pebarjoy, which made landfall on the coast of Gujarat last week, has left a trail of devastation across Saurashtra and Kutch regions as per the baseline assessment of devastation by various government agencies.

According to state government officials, more than 1.11 electric poles of Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Ltd, a government-owned power distribution company in Saurashtra and Kutch districts, were damaged by Cyclone Biparjoy and 3,400 villages were without power.

Cyclone Biparjoy caused heavy rains on the roads and an initial assessment found that 3,893 km of roads were partially or completely damaged. As many as 2,222 Kucha homes were partially damaged. The total number of homes affected was 3,056 in the state. Moreover, 3,021 trees were downed or removed in the state,” he said.

The government official added that as many as 1,260 communications towers were damaged after the hurricane hit.

“Due to the preparation of the state government jointly with the union government, there were no casualties in the state as the state government had diverted more than one person living from the coastal areas. Interestingly, 1,206 pregnant women were shifted to safer places from the cyclone affected area , including 707 women who delivered babies in hospitals or community health centres.

“The entire machine has been put in place to restore the electric current and repair the damaged roads,” one of the officials added.
