The video is purported to be of an incident that took place at Maharaja Agrasen Ghat in Haridwar

Police in Mundi said they have launched an investigation into a video circulating on social media of a young man allegedly trying to expel a group of men and women from the Ganga Ghat here for being non-Hindu. The video is purported to be of an incident that took place at Maharaja Agrasen Ghat in Haridwar.

A senior official said that after the video came to light, the police took action and in view of the sensitive nature of the incident, Department Officer Juhi Manral asked for an investigation. The city’s superintendent of police, Swatantra Kumar, said information has been collected about the incident and efforts are underway to identify the youth and the group of people involved in the incident.

He said that after the investigation is over, measures will be taken according to the rules. In the video, the young man allegedly threatens other members of the community and is heard saying that only Hindus are allowed to come to the Ganga Ghats.

Young men and women in the group are seen arguing with young men. Someone told him that he drives a car in Har Ki Buri. But the young man refused to listen to anything and kept asking them to leave the ghat headquarters. Satpal Brahmachari, President of the Urban Congress and former President of Haridwar Municipality (now the Municipal Corporation), said such incidents are very serious.

He said that as per the rules, non-Hindus cannot reside permanently in the Haridwar and Kankhal police station area and non-Hindus are also prohibited from entering Har kipuri district. But in the Maharaja of Agrasen Ghat, which belongs to Jwalapur Kotwali, there are no restrictions on movement and bathing in the Ganges, he said.
