The erstwhile Congress government promoted two state engineering colleges as technical universities in 2021. Earlier, these two colleges were affiliated to IKGPTU and are now known as Shahid Bhagat Singh State University, Firozpur and Sardar Bint Singh State University, Gurdaspur.

While serving as VC, Dr. Mittal was welcomed by the University Registrar, Dr SK Mishra, and Finance Officer, Dr Sukhbir Singh Walia.
