Three people were sentenced to ten years in prison on Monday in connection with the rape of an underage girl in 2019.
The woman and her partner were found guilty of taking the minor to the man who raped her under the pretense of offering her a job.
According to memos filed by Special Prosecutor Vina Schiller, in May 2019 the 17-year-old victim, a resident of the city’s eastern suburbs, was offered a job by the woman who lived in her neighborhood.
The teenager was offered a job as a domestic servant. The accused woman and her partner first took a picture of the teenager. Then they took her to a house where the main accused was present.
The accused raped the victim while the two accused waited outside the house. They threatened her that they had a video of the act and if she revealed anything about it to anyone, they would circulate it.
The victim went home and kept quiet about the act because of the threat. A month later, the victim told her older sister that she had missed her period.
When her sister took her for a check-up, it was revealed that the victim was pregnant. The news came as a shock, and when questioned by her sister, the victim spilled the beans. She told her sister about the accused, the crime and the threats made against her.
The two then approached the police, who filed an FIR against the rapist and the accused woman over allegations including rape under the Indian Penal Code and the Child Sexual Offenses Protection Act.
The Special Court found the main accused guilty of rape and criminal intimidation charges, while the woman and another defendant were sentenced to rape mitigation. The woman and her partner were also found guilty of failing to report the rape, which is an offense under Section 21 of the POCSO Act.
