Biden to meet with AI experts in San Francisco

President Joe Biden will meet with artificial intelligence experts in San Francisco on Tuesday as the US government continues to strive to find the best ways to regulate the technology, according to a White House official.

The visit comes as many in Washington seek to learn more about the risks and benefits of artificial intelligence for society so as not to repeat the mistakes of the lack of early regulation on social media and other Internet technologies.

Biden is expected to meet with eight experts involved in researching artificial intelligence or advocating for its potential implications. They include:

• Humanity Technology Center Co-founder and CEO Tristan Harris, former design ethicist at Google Also known for his criticism of technology platforms as in the documentary “The Social Dilemma”.
• Common sense media Founder and CEO Jim Steyer, who advocates for policies that enable a safer Internet experience for families.
• Computational Justice League Founder Joy Buolamwin, whose organization raises awareness of the potential impact and biases that artificial intelligence can have on society.
• Khan Academy Founder and CEO Sal Khan, who runs the nonprofit online education organization.

The issue has fueled much discussion in the Biden administration, with White House managers meeting to discuss AI two to three times a week, according to a White House official.

In May, Vice President Kamala Harris hosted AI executives, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Google CEO Sundar Pichai. Shortly thereafter, Altman testifies before Congress as lawmakers contemplate how to create rules of the road for technology to mitigate bias and deal with the consequences for the workforce, among other things.

Biden is also expected to do a fundraiser for his 2024 re-election campaign during his visit to the West, according to Associated Press.
