Junagadh police said Monday that 35 people, including a minor, have been arrested for the violence unleashed by a mob on Friday, which left one dead and four policemen injured among others.

Violence erupted after Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JuMc) issued demolition show cause notices to Hazrat Jabanshah Pir Dargah near Majevadi Gate on Friday. When hundreds pelted stones, police retaliation followed to disperse the crowd.

A 62-year-old man died and four police personnel, including Junagadh DySP Hitesh Dhandhaliya, were injured in the ensuing chaos. A police officer, a few police cars, and a state transport bus were vandalized.

Superintendent of Police Junagadh Ravi Teja Vasamsity told the Indian Express on Monday that more arrests are expected as the investigation deepens. Vasamsity added that a few people were arrested based on the names taken by other accused. He said that among the detainees was a 16-year-old boy.

In widely shared videos purporting to show at least seven men seen being publicly flogged, Vasamsity said Deputy Inspector of Police (DySP) Mangrol DV Kodiyatar had been assigned to the matter. In the clip, at least seven men, who were allegedly involved in a stone-throwing incident, can be seen being whipped by two plainclothes policemen. “DySP Mangrol is in charge of investigating this matter. Tomorrow (Tuesday), we are busy with the Rath Yatra, so (the investigation) will start in three or four days,” Vasamsity said.

He added that the process of pre-trial detention is underway for the detainees, adding that the police will request a one-week pre-trial detention for the detainees.

In the meantime, the Gujarat High Court is set to hear three petitions filed by the Samsah Fund for Sunni Muslims, challenging the notifications issued by the JuMC to Hazrat Jibanshah Pir Dargah (Danabeth), Hazrat Jamialsadar Dargah, Hazrat Rushansha Pir Bawa Dargah and Hazrat Khangesha Pir W. Hazrat Jabansha Pir Dargah (Magwadi Gate). The petitions present the property in question that has been notified of JuMC Notices is endowment property. Petitions seek JuMC notifications to be overturned and pending a final decision on the petitions, the status quo should be maintained by turning off JuMC notifications.
