The Prime Minister received a warm welcome from the Indian community during his arrival in New York
Members of the Indian diaspora welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi upon his arrival in New York on Tuesday on the first leg of his inaugural state visit to the United States. Among them was Minch C Patel, who was seen wearing a unique Nehru jacket with the prime minister’s portrait printed on it.
Speaking to ANI, Patel said, “This jacket was made in 2015 during Gujarat Day… We have 26 of these (jackets) and out of these 26 jacket(s), four are here today.”

Patel was referring to Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the US in 2015, a year after he won the Lok Sabha elections.
The Prime Minister was warmly welcomed by the Indian community upon his arrival in New York. To cheers of “Modi Modi,” he shook hands with the prime minister and, wearing a smile, greeted enthusiastic expatriates at the airport.
On his first leg of his visit to the US, Prime Minister Modi will lead the International Day of Yoga celebrations at the United Nations Headquarters on Wednesday. “I will begin my visit in New York, where I will celebrate the International Day of Yoga on June 21 at the United Nations Headquarters with the leadership of the United Nations and members of the international community,” the prime minister said in a statement.
“I look forward to this special celebration at the same location that supported India’s proposal in December 2014 to celebrate the International Day of Yoga,” he said.
He is also scheduled to meet CEOs including Twitter chief Elon Musk, Nobel laureates, economists, artists, scientists, entrepreneurs, academics and health sector experts in New York.
