From New York, Modi will head to Washington, D.C., where he will hold talks with President Biden
Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a lively welcome from the Indian community on Tuesday at New York’s Lotte Hotel, where he will be staying during his visit to the city.
The Indian diaspora cheered and waved flags as slogans like “bharat mata ki jai” and “vande mataram” echoed through the hotel.
Prime Minister Modi, who is on his first state visit to the US, will preside over celebrations for the International Day of Yoga at the United Nations Headquarters and will hold bilateral talks with President Joe Biden in Washington.

The Prime Minister was received at the airport by Indian Ambassador to the United States Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj.
Prime Minister Modi received a warm welcome upon his arrival here as members of the American Indian community cheered him and raised slogans in his favour.
“It was the best moment of my life,” said a member of the Indian diaspora who was part of the unit that greeted Prime Minister Modi in New York.
Modi is visiting the US from June 21-24 at the invitation of President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, who will host him at a state dinner on June 22. The visit includes a speech by the Prime Minister at the joint session of the United States. Congress on June 22.
In his departure statement, Modi said that this “special invitation” from President Biden and the first lady to visit a country is a reflection of the vitality and dynamism of the partnership between democracies.

Nine years after Prime Minister Modi first proposed from the platform of the United Nations General Assembly to celebrate the International Day of Yoga as an annual observance, the Indian leader will for the first time be at the United Nations Headquarters to lead a yoga session in a historic observance of the day.
From New York, Modi will head to Washington, D.C., where he will hold talks with President Biden.
The Prime Minister noted that President Biden had had the opportunity to meet several times since his last official visit to the US in September 2021. “This visit will be an opportunity to enrich the depth and diversity of our partnership,” Modi said.
Modi said his discussions with President Biden and other top US leaders will provide an opportunity to strengthen bilateral cooperation as well as in multilateral forums such as the G20, Quad and IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity).
The prime minister said he would also join President Biden and the first lady at a state banquet along with a number of dignitaries.
Noting that the US Congress has always given strong bipartisan support to India-US relations, Modi said that during his visit, he will address a joint session of the US Congress at the invitation of the Congress leadership.
“The strong bond between the people has been instrumental in developing trust between our two countries. I look forward to meeting the vibrant American Indian community who represents the best in our communities.”
Modi will also meet business leaders, interact with Indian society and meet thought leaders from different walks of life.
The prime minister said that the United States is India’s largest trading partner in goods and services, and the two countries cooperate closely in the areas of science and technology, education, health, defense and security.
Modi expressed confidence that his visit to the United States will strengthen the relations between the two countries based on the common values of democracy, diversity and freedom.
From the United States, Modi is heading to Egypt at the invitation of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi.
