Moviegoers spread their fortunes over Father’s Day weekend with a diverse slate of new releases and perennial favorites.

Mixed results saw disappointing debuts from “The Flash” and “Elemental,” while Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse continued to enthrall ticket buyers.

Robbins pointed to the controversy surrounding star Ezra Miller, the lack of consistency in the DC movie franchise and a hyper-focused marketing campaign targeting only die-hard fans for a lower-than-expected box office opening.

“Audiences have shown in recent months and years post-Endgame that they are becoming more selective about which comic book movies will earn their dollars at the box office,” he said.

It wasn’t the only film that had a poor audience response over the weekend. Disney The animation continued with the release of “Elemental”, which is projected to be the second-lowest opening of any wide-release Pixar film in the studio’s history. Pixar also faces stiff competition from rival animation studios. The animation arms of Universal’s Illumination and DreamWorks have dominated the box office with films like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” and “Minions: The Rise of Gru.”

And then there Sony “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” which has continued to captivate audiences since its debut on June 2. The film grossed an estimated $27.8 million over three days and has grossed $489.3 million worldwide since its June 2 release.

Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore, said, “While there was no major overperformance by large-scale newcomers, this weekend was marked by the sheer number of films and the wide variety of audience demographics that were drawn to the multiplex. “.

Paramount “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” added $20 million domestically, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” took in another $11.6 million in ticket sales, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3 on another 5 million dollars.

Over the Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays of Father’s Day weekend, the domestic box office is expected to post just under $175 million in receipts. That’s 5% higher than the amount over the same period in 2022 and 28% higher than in 2019, according to data from Comscore.
