Colleagues said the dean of Indian advertising, Sylvester D’Acuna, who created the beloved “quite buttery” Amul Girl campaign in 1966, died late Tuesday.

He was in his eighties and was succeeded by his wife, Nisha, their son, and advertising guru Rahul Dakhuna. He was the brother of the late advertising genius Gerson DaCona.

In 1966, the managing director of the advertising agency ASP, Silvestre Dacunha, and his artistic director, Eustace Fernández, designed the iconic Amul Girl campaign that won the hearts of millions and was widely recognized during its golden jubilee in 2016.

The ad had a special sense of humor, and the sly Amul girl in a polka-dot dress, with chubby rosy cheeks, did not hesitate to mock the greats and powerful of India, including the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amitabh Bachchan and many others.

Amul is credited with running what might be the longest-running chunky ad campaign in Mumbai’s picturesque Chowpatty with numerous quotations and even appearances in local newspapers.

Tributes poured in on social media for Director of Advertising with Amul India GM Marketing, Pavan Singh, expressing his grief over Sylvester’s passing.

“It is very sad to learn that Sylvester Dacunha, a legend of the Indian advertising world, is no longer with us. It has been an honor to learn the art of brand communications and advertising, from him over the course of nearly 3 decades,” Singh said.

And remember how it was Sylvester D’Acunha, along with the legendary Dr. Verghese Corinne, who launched Amul’s “timeless, thematic and symbolic campaign in 1966, which is one of the longest running continuously running ad campaigns in the world.”

Paying tribute to the legend, Singh said, “This campaign has soared to new heights, seamlessly transitioning from OOH to print, TV and then digital and social media, boosting its reach and popularity across multiple generations!”
